Alex Owens is a classically training young bass-baritone vocalist currently studying under tenor Timothy Reynolds.
Alex has been performing from a young age in various musical theatre productions, but since discovering classical singing in 2015, Alex has pursued this passion wholeheartedly, studying under Jocelyn Hickey and Timothy Reynolds at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School from 2016-2017.
A lover of both solo and choral singing, Alex sung with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic and the Victorian Opera’s Youth Chorus Ensemble in 2017, and will be joining the MSO Chorus and the Melbourne Bach Choir as their youth scholar in 2018. In 2017, Alex has been privileged to place first in both the MSV’s Ron McNicol Vocal Award and the VCASS Outstanding Soloist Competition, and has also been honoured with VCASS’s Robert Saltzer Vocal Award and Musicology Award, Melbourne University’s Bachelor of Music Scholarship, and a perfect score of 50 in his VCE study “Music Investigations”.
Outside of singing, Alex is a keen composer and has studied under Anthony Lyons. Alex is the recipient of the 2017 David Henkel Composition Award and the 2018 VCAA Margaret Schofield Memorial Scholarship for composition.
